About Us

The Mizzou Space Program is a student-led organization that is focused on furthering aerospace engineering interest by competing in collegiate rocket competitions, working on individual Tripoli Rocketry Association certification rockets, and conducting research into high-powered rocketry and rocket propulsion systems. MSP also provides current students the opportunities to network in the growing aerospace industry and inspires student interest in STEM through K-12 outreach events. Formed from the merger of the university's chapters of Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (SEDS) and American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) in 2018, MSP is now one of the largest engineering organizations on campus with members representing a variety of backgrounds and fields of study.

Projects

Spaceport America Cup: The Spaceport America Cup is the world's largest IREC (Intercollegiate Rocket Engineering Competition) for student rocketry teams. With over 150 teams from colleges and universities in 32 countries, the competition continues to grow every year. Students launch solid, bi-liquid and hybrid rockets to target altitudes of 10,000 and 30,000 feet.

Argonia Cup: The goal for the 2023 Argonia Cup competition is to launch a two-stage rocket powered vehicle containing as many golf balls as possible in a payload, while also trying to achieve as high of an altitude as well.

Propulsion Research: MSP's primary goal is to produce solid rocket motors for our Spaceport America Cup rockets. Our secondary goal is to fly a hybrid rocket a few years down the road. Our propulsion research could lead to us being able to launch rockets up to 50,000 feet or higher with which MSP could fly payloads built by our organization, companies, or researchers.

New Member Rocket: In fall 2023, new members will have the opportunity to work as a team to design, build and fly a Tripoli Level 2 sized rocket. New members have complete autonomy over the project, and are able to see a project's full life cycle in a short period of time. This educates engineers and creates leaders at a very early point in their college experience.

Membership Benefits

The members of the Mizzou Space Program, both past and present, have seen a multitude of opportunities that would not have been possible without the experiences that this organization provided. Past and present members have received employment at top-tier aerospace engineering companies. Recent members have obtained internships, co-ops, and full-time positions with Sierra Nevada Corporation, Boeing, Textron Aviation, Millennium Space Systems, JPL, SAIC, Sierra Space, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Honeywell Aerospace, Garmin, SpaceX, Blue Origin, and NASA.

Partnerships

The Mizzou Space Program is looking for partners to help us advance our projects and provide experience for students. If you are interested in donating funding, materials, software, or expertise, please contact us. Because MSP is a recognized student organization at the University of Missouri, we are a tax-exempt group and any donations are tax-deductible.
